2013 World Health Day’s theme: High blood pressure

April 5, 2013

World Health Day is celebrated on April 7th to mark the anniversary of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948. Each year, a theme is selected for World Health Day, that highlights a priority area of public health concern in the world.

The theme for 2013 is high blood pressure, also known as hypertension. One in three adults worldwide has high blood pressure. This proportion increases with age, with one person in ten in their 20s and 30s, to one person in two in their 50s. WHO reminds us that high blood pressure increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes and kidney failure. If left uncontrolled, it can also cause blindness.

However, high blood pressure is both preventable and treatable, mainly by reducing salt intake, eating a balanced diet, limiting consumption of alcohol and tobacco, and taking regular physical activity.

If you wish to reduce your cardiovascular risk, our ‘Heart Healthy’ meal plans will be precious allies, since they are designed for controlling hypertension. Based on the Mediterranean diet, they are a breeze to prepare and finger-licking good.

The Cardiovascular Centre of CHUM (University of Montreal’s Health Center) has been prescribing these meal plans to their outside patients for over a year now.
