February is not only the month in which Valentine’s Day falls, but also the month of the heart and awareness about cardiovascular diseases.
The “recipe” for becoming heart-healthy is simple: 1) Do regular physical exercise; 2) Don’t smoke; 3) Lose excess weight; 4) Adopt healthy food habits that highlight fruits, vegetables, nuts, whole grain cereals, fish and low-fat dairy products. Consumption of red meat, fats, sugar and salt should be kept to a minimum.
If you are in Montreal, you’ll be able to have your cardiovascular health checked this week at the Grande-Place du Complexe-Desjardins during the “Cardiovascular disease awareness day” on February 6 and 7. This event is organised by CHUM to raise public awareness about the importance of prevention. Cardiologists, kinesiologists, nurses, technologists, nutritionists and psychologists will be there to help you improve your cardiovascular health.
